Prof. Brenda Mary Gourley , Vice Chancellor of the Open University (OU) , UK, made a goodwill visit to Tamkang University on January 24, 2005. The Open University, established in 1971, was the first open university of the world. With about 200,000 student enrollment, OU is one of the major suppliers for distance learning program in UK. OU, with the outstanding performance on education, is ranked the 10 th for its academic quality and quantity, and the 27 th for its scientific development, among the 150 universities in UK. Prof. Brenda Mary Gourley became South Africa’s first female Vice-Chancellor when she was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natal in 1994. In 2002, She became The Open University’s fourth Vice-Chancellor, the first woman to lead Britain’s largest and most innovative university. Prof. Gourley specializes in the fields of system control management, strategy of the company management, and information processing system management. Prof. Gourley’s visiting TKU offered an opportunity to discuss the possibility of academic cooperation between the Open University and Tamkang University. The distinguished guest first attended a briefing presided over by President Flora C. I. Chang, and also engaged in a discussion with TKU faculty and Deans of Colleges. After the discussion, Prof. Gourley visited Distant Learning Center and Chueh-sheng Memorial Library. They were quite impressed by the campus facilities and the beauty of the campus, and will keep close contact with TKU for further possible cooperation.
