Dr. Flora C. I. Chang, President of Tamkang University (TKU), and Prof. John Belcher, President of the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF), signed a cooperation memorandum Tuesday, April 10, 2007. Founded in 2000 in Indiana, U. S. A. as a non-profit organization, the SAF has been promoting overseas study around the globe and providing related consulting services to foster international academic exchanges worldwide by utilizing its resources, revenue, donations and gains from other foundations and organizations. The network of its cooperative relations consists of more than 200 universities in the U. S., Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. In 2007, the SAF is expected to sign cooperation memorandums with around a dozen of universities in Taiwan, among which TKU is the first to sign the memo with the SAF. This newly-signed cooperation project will facilitate TKU’s international exchanges including enrolling international students to the University and dispatching TKU students abroad for study. In addition to TKU’s current sister universities, TKU students may choose their destinations for overseas study among all universities with cooperative links to the SAF while most course credits are transferable between universities. This would mean TKU students are offered many more options for studying abroad, and the University will become better known to students in those universities, and attract them to TKU for short-term programs as well as degree programs. The Office of International Exchange and International Education will, on a non-scheduled basis, invite the SAF staff members to TKU campuses and make arrangements for briefings and seminars to help students fully understand how the SAF functions. More and more universities will be joining the SAF network.
