Dr. Jacques Legrand, President, Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), made a goodwill visit to Tamkang University (TKU) on December 20, 2006. L’Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) is a public institute, which was founded by Colbert in 1669 as l’Ecole des jeunes de langues. Over 90 languages and civilization are taught at the INALCO; it is also one of the largest institutes specialized in language and civilization education. Not only languages, INALCO also offers courses in areas such as Geography, History Politics, Economy, and Sociology. In the year 2004-05, INALCO had a total number of 11,832 students. With strong international cooperation, INALCO has 55 sister universities in Europe, and 155 sister universities in countries outside Europe. The main purpose for Dr. Jacques Legrand’s visit was to discuss the possibility of academic exchange with French Department of Tamkang University. Dr. Jacques Legrand first attended a discussion hosted by Dr. Chao-Kang Feng, Vice President for academic affairs & Chairman of International Exchange Committee. After the discussion, the guest visited Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center and Chueh-sheng Memorial Library.
