Prof. Hai-Lung Dai, Temple University, U.S.A. made a goodwill visit to Tamkang University on December 6, 2007. The chief purpose of Prof. Dai’s visit was to discuss the possibility of academic cooperation on 3+2 dual degree program (3-year undergraduate study at TKU for the TKU Bachelor degree + 2-year graduate study at Temple University for the Temple University Master degree). In aware of the decreasing number of Taiwanese students to study in U.S.A., Temple University developed a “3+2 dual degree program”, hoping to attract more Taiwanese students to study in Temple University. They have signed the cooperation agreements with some Taiwanese Universities. Being a Taiwanese and also an old friend of Prof. Kao’s, from the department of the Department of Chemistry at Tamkang University, the discussion between two parties became easier and smoother. After watching the brief presentation of TKU and discussing on the international exchange by Vice President for International Affairs, Dr. Wan-chin Tai, Prof. Dai was highly impressed on the globalization of TKU, and hope to foster the academic cooperation between Temple University and Tamkang University. The tuition for Temple University is USD$18,000 per year (or USD$12,000 with scholarship), and the living expense is estimated at about USD$10,000 to USD$20,000 per year. Temple University does not require GRE scores or GMAT scores for entrance. The minimum TOEFL requirement is negotiable. The possible departments for academic cooperation between Temple University and Tamkang University are Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Department of Water Resources & Environmental Engineering, Department of International Trade, and Department of Global Politics and Economics of the College of Global Research and Development. Vice-President Tai thought the exchange can be started from Department of Chemistry, TKU, since Prof. Kao is the alumna of Temple University, which will benefit the cooperation. Tamkang University is also interested in other kinds of dual degree programs with Temple University, such as “ 3+1 dual bachelor degree program” and “ 1+1 dual master degree program”. Prof Dai also held the positive attitude toward the cooperation on these two programs and hope the two universities can sign the academic agreement soon, and start the substantial academic cooperation.
