Dr. Mineo Nakajima, President of Akita International University(AIU), led a delegation to visit Tamkang University and signed the Academic Exchange Agreement between Tamkang University (TKU) and AIUon March2, 2005. AIU thus became the 80 th sister university of TKU and TKU’s 15 th sister university in Japan, AIU first opened its doors in April 2004 and has already established itself as a leader in university education in Japan. It is a small, globally-oriented liberal arts college based in beautiful Akita Prefecture in the northern part of Japan, Tohoku. Except for the language courses, all courses at AIU are taught in English and every AIU student is required to study abroad for period of at least one year. Members of our faculty come from the world’s top universities and have rich, international teaching and research experiences. Many have had exceptional professional success in their respective field, The ratio of faculty members to students on the campus is currently set at 1:9, the smallest faculty-student ratio in the universities of Japan. The University Library at AIU is the only university library in Japan that is open 24 hours a day. Students can be found studying there in the midnight hours. AIU is dedicated to helping their students become world citizens through an academic program that emphasizes rigorous academic training, the development of practical skills, and the attainment of a deep awareness of global issues. AIU adopts the English-instructed teaching and the residential college system that requires students to live in the campus. In addition, students need to spend one year abroad. The policies of its management and development are very similar to what will be implemented in LanYang Campus of TKU. Therefore, So when Dr. Chao-kang Feng, Vice- President for Academic Affairs led a delegation to visit AIU last November, President Nakajima of AIU and Vice-President Feng of TKU agreed to set up some academic cooperation programs between two universities. Winona State university, one of TKU’s sister universities in USA, also have built the sistership with AIU, so the three universities may develop into a triangle cooperation relationship. After signing the academic exchange agreement, there will be a closer relationship between two universities and the more substantial academic cooperation programs would be carried out in the near future.
