At the beginning of this new semester, Tamkang University was joyful to see her old friend again as Prof.Osamu Nakayama, President of Reitaku University (Japan), and his colleagues visited Tamsui campus on Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Tamkang University and Reitaku University began arranging their exchange projects back in 1980, and before long in 1981 formal exchanges in language and culture learning between students of the two universities kicked off. On January 18, 1982, the two schools became sister universities under former president of Tamkang Dr, Clement C. P. Chang and former president of Reitaku Sentaro Hiroike. From 1981 to 1984, Tamkang and Reitaku had been sending students to each other for one-month study. In 1985, 30 Reitaku junior students (including 9 females) majoring in Chinese became the first to study in Tamkang for credits as Tamkang formally set up “Class for Reitaku Students,” marking an important step in the two universities’ academic exchange. Reitaku International House, built in 1988 under the collaboration of the two schools in the hope of providing a habitation where Reitaku students and Tamkang’s Japanese majors could live and learn under the same roof, also represented a milestone in the history of Tamkang’s exchange with foreign universities. In 1993, Tamkang also started sending students to Reitaku for formal credits. Dr. Nakayama, who was the former dean of College of Foreign Studies (name changed from College of Foreign Languages in 2003) and once visited Tamkang in March 2005, became President of Reitaku University in April 2007, and paid this special visit to Tamkang with his colleagues Dr. Tetsu Matsuda, Chair of Chinese Department and Ms. Toshiko Takajima of Reitaku’s International Exchange Center while expressing his sincerity to invite President Chang to attend the 50th anniversary celebration of Reitaku University which will be held in October, 2009 and also hope to further strengthen the exchange relationship between the two schools. The distinguished guests firstly attended a briefing and discussions chaired by Dr. Flora C. I. Chang, President of Tamkang University, and were joined by Tamkang’s Dr. Wan-Chin Tai, Vice President for International Affairs, Dr. Mei-hwa Sung, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Dr. Chuen-young Perng, Chair of the Department of Japanese, Dr. Cheng-Tsong Tsui, Chair of the Department of Chinese, and Dr. Lily H. M. Chen, Director of the Office of International Exchange and International Education (OIEIE). The guests, accompanied by staff of the OIEIE, also visited a number of TKU facilities including Reitaku International House and Chueh-sheng Memorial Library. At noon, they enjoyed a lunch banquet hosted by President Chang at the Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall.
