Prof. Matthias Winiger , President, and Dipl. Ing. Liselotte Krickau-Richte, Director of the Office of International Exchange, the University of Bonn (UOB), Germany , made a goodwill visit to Tamkang University (TKU) on May 6, 2005. University of Bonn was established in 1818. It is one of the largest and most multifaceted institutions of higher education in Germany. They see themselves as an institution that is modern and yet rooted in tradition. UOB offers in seven faculties almost 100 courses and subjects. At present, about 38,000 students, including 2,400 foreign students from more than a hundred countries worldwide, and more than 8,500 academic and ancillary staff study, teach and work at these faculties. Since 1994, TKU sends about 20 junior students from the Department of German to study in UOB every year; the credits that students acquired from UOB can be transferred to TKU. A close and continuing academic cooperation between two institutions has been proceeding since then. Till now, TKU has sent about 200 German majors spend their junior studying in UOB. In 2000, the University of Bonn signed the formal academic exchange agreement with TKU, both universities started to send the exchange students on the reciprocal basis. When the two distinguished guests visited TKU, firstly, they accompanied by Dr. Chao-kang Feng, Vice President, and Dr. Lily H.M Chen, Director of the Office of International exchanges & International Education, met President Dr. Flora C.I. Chang at her office. They had a very cheerful and happy conversation. As President Chang had visited UOB and met Prof. Matthias Winiger and Dipl. Ing. Liselotte Krickau-Richter in their campus when she led the delegation to visit TKU’s Sister Universities in Europe in late April. The two guests paid a return visit this time and helped strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two universities. After the meeting with President Chang, they visited Carrie Chang Fine Arts Center and Chueh-sheng Memorial Library, and discussed academic exchange issues with the faculty of Department of German. At night , they attended dinner hosted by President Chang at Chueh-sheng International Conference Hall. This was our honorable guests’ first trip to Tamkang University. They were excited about their visit, and were quite impressed with the beauty of the campus and facilities.
